The Wolf Of Wall Street

Looking at the world we live in, there is one thing that really strikes me. The way people are all striving for bliss, joy and everlasting happiness. Some look for the key to these things in religion, politics, drugs and so on. But there are those who for some reason (probably the most objective reason) think that the only plausible way to achieve this is money. Lots of it. In fact the more, the better. So, this got me thinking, how much money is really enough to make you happy? $1M? $2M? I mean, is there a number that you can think about that will be enough to buy off your happiness or anyone’s happiness for that matter? And what are you ready to do, what sacrifices are you ready to make to get that dough? In my opinion, these are the type of questions Martin Scorsese asked himself when shooting what in my opinion might be hands down one of the best movies ever [^_^] I know that I say this about almost every movie that I write a review on, but the thing is that the more I think about all this awesome Cinema that is out there, the more I come to the conclusion that the movie industry is not such a lost cause as I described it in my Keanu Reeves post earlier. Indeed, when it comes to being original and professional about the art of making Cinema, Hollywood still has some awesomeness to show us. In fact, the more we move in time, the more I get the feeling that there is still much more to discover and explore; and that the way people will write, tell and portray stories will be an ever evolving process and for a futurist like myself, the state of affairs we have going on can’t get any better. Though for the biggest part of the industry it’s all about the money and box office charts, there is still a faint light of hope regarding Cinema that has no intention of fading away. The Wolf Of Wall Street is a testament to that and here is why…

To cut a long story short, this movie might be described as a story of the rise and fall of a Wall Street broker, who goes from riches to hell in a time-lapse of about 10 years. But sticking with this description will bore you guys to hell and won’t actually give a good enough description of what The Wolf Of Wall Street is all about. Indeed, my interpretation of this movie will be that which describes it as the best possible description of what money makes people do and the insanity it induces. I mean, we all have an idea of what it is to be a broker and so on, right? The kind of alpha-male that seems to know something that other people don’t like making money and turning thousands of dollars into millions. Along that there are the drugs, prostitutes and an incessant drive for more and more money. Trust me, if this is the image you had in mind The Wolf Of Wall Street delivers. Actually this is an aspect of the movie that put off a lot of people. Indeed, the abundance of drugs, sex and insanity might be some sort of repellant, but this is just the world we live in a world full of Crazy People where neurotic behaviour such as the one portrayed in the movie has become nothing else, but a mundanity that I’m ashamed to say people have learned to cope with. So, what the hell is all the fuss about? Is the first time you guys see somebody using on screen or perhaps it is your first sex scene you happen to witness? There are many more obscene movies out there and The Wolf Of Wall Street is not a pioneer at all. In fact I think that the idea behind this abundance of vice is to draw the audience’s attention to the bigger picture which is the way money corrupts our minds and makes us turn into completely different people. You can easily see this transformation with Leonardo DiCaprio’s character who goes from an ambitious young man eager to achieve his ultimate aim that of wealth all the way down to an alpha-male on steroids who blinded by money goes along destroying everything he has created so far. Though this is a recurrent theme in most movies such as Boogie Nights,  Scarface and so on, this has never been done so concisely with the milieu of Wall Street, the Stock Market and brokers. So, great job with this one Mr. Scorsese.
And what’s up with all the complaints about the fact that this film is 3 hours long? Guys, have you forgotten about the classics we have such as The God Father, Casino and so on? These are epic movies which tell a plot and depict characters which are way to complicated to be portrayed in a movie that will be shorter than 3 hours. We are talking about destinies of people who, though imaginary for the most part, were some sort of rebels living life the way they saw it. So, if a director sees it that way, then I guess there’s nothing we could possible do about it. You just have to learn how to deal with it. I mean, the whole idea of going to the movies or watching a movie for that matter is to be carried away by a narrative that makes you leave your comfort zone and reach out to areas of your mind and imagination you couldn’t think about prior to watching this or that movie. So, if you guys are in search of a thrilling movie experience that stands out of all the crap we have these days, I can’t think of anything better than The Wolf Of Wall Street. And then you'll tell me if it's $1M, $2M,...?[^_^]
